A few years ago, I helped out on a pilot in production, which means I went to the runthrough, saw the show on its feet, and then went back to the office with the writer and creator and helped him punch-up his show. Which is a tricky thing, because it's always hard to tell someone, "Hey, that joke you wrote? Doesn't work." And on the other side, it's always hard to tell a friend who is trying to help, for free, "Hey, that joke you pitched? Doesn't work..."
