FROM THIS EPISODE

sherlock_holmes.jpgIn Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, director Guy Ritchie (Revolver, RocknRolla) brought high-voltage filmmaking to modern London. He creates a venerable legend of an earlier time with Sherlock Holmes.

Ritchie explains what drew him to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's brilliant and eccentric detective, who he'd only heard on cassette and had never seen on screen; his strategy of casting Robert Downey, Jr, an American, in the lead role; and Holmes' relevance 120 years after he was first created. He also discusses his own interest in genius and madness, Brazilian martial arts, the aesthetic quality of twilight in film and why he thinks of himself as a feral director.
