FROM THIS EPISODE

The album Straight Outta Compton created both a cultural style that spread nationwide and a notorious image for the Southern California City. Now rap artists Dr. Dre and Ice Cube are making a film depicting the Compton of 25 years ago — as the current, 31-year-old Mayor tries to shake off that image. Also, a dispute in the deputies' union could influence this year's election for Sheriff of LA County, and a shortage of limes means trouble for Mexican farmers and Mexican food in Southern California.

We look at the reasons, the consequences and what might be done in the interests of public health.

Dispute in Deputies' Union May Influence Sheriff's Election 5 MIN, 6 SEC

The LA Sheriff's Deputies Union is a political action committee with $2.5 million. Its endorsement could make a big difference in this years' unprecedented Sheriff's election. Incumbent Lee Baca has stepped down after almost 20 years on the job and six candidates are running to replace him. The union is divided for reasons so Byzantine, we won't go into detail, but the election appears to be one of the reasons. That's according to Celeste Fremon, journalist specializing in law enforcement and criminal justice and blogger at WitnessLA.com.

The City of Compton: On the Streets and on Film 15 MIN, 8 SEC

It's been more than 25 years since NWA released Straight outta Compton, and band members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre are now making a film about the city and their rise to fame. But Compton's current Mayor hopes they're engaging in ancient history. There's no question that Compton has changed, and we talk with the new Mayor, Aja Brown, after we hear from KCRW's Avishay Artsy, who went to a casting call for the movie.
