FROM THIS EPISODE

It's the first day of a new era at Los Angeles City Hall as Eric Garcetti brings the Mayor's office down to size, replacing larger-than-life Antonio Villaraigosa. How will the new Mayor cope with a new, Sacramento-ized City Council, not to mention traffic jams, problem-schools, a lack of affordable housing and the restless leadership of organized labor?  Also, Proposition 8 is a thing of the past, and same-sex weddings are under way all over California. We hear from gay and lesbian couples tying the knot from Norwalk, to Beverly Hills to West Hollywood.

A year later, Mohammed Morsi became Egypt's first elected president — but now millions are back in the streets demanding that he step down.

Main Topic A New City Hall 13 MIN, 49 SEC

Eric Garcetti, who was president of the LA City Council until he decided to run for Mayor, was elected to lead America’s second largest city in a very low-turnout election. He'll have to deal with a very different body than the one he used to run. Garcetti spent his first morning as mayor talking to business groups — with some conspicuous exceptions. The Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Valley Industry and Commerce Association were not at the table. Can he expect widespread support as his term gets under way?

Making News Gay Marriages Underway Across California 12 MIN, 49 SEC

Yesterday, US Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy denied an appeal from supporters of Proposition 8, the ban on same-sex marriage, making it the law of the land in California. (It’s worth remembering that all this is taking place because California officials have refused to defend Prop 8 in state or federal courts.) KCRW's Saul Gonzalez found that gay and lesbian couples aren’t losing time.
