KCRW Presents UpClose:
An evening with Bookworm host Michael Silverblatt and best selling novelist Sapphire

Reading and Conversation at Soho House in West Hollywood
Sunday, July 24
5pm (doors at 4:30pm, check-in begins at 4:15pm)
Tickets go on sale Thursday, July 7 at 10am

On Sunday, July 24, join KCRW for an evening with acclaimed interviewer and Bookworm host Michael Silverblatt and Sapphire, the best selling novelist behind Precious and the forthcoming novel The Kid. It will be an intimate evening of reading and conversation at Soho House in West Hollywood.

“Sapphire, poet and author of Push (on which the film Precious was based), has a new novel, The Kid, told from the point of view of Precious' son, Abdul. Precious has died of AIDS, and her son, aged nine, tells us what his life is about to become. While Sapphire is often known as a taboo breaker and a provocateur, we want to consider her as an artist -- not only an African American ground-breaking original, but also a major contributor to the future of the American novel. “

- Michael Silverblatt

The film adaption of her novel, Precious, received the Academy Award for Best Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress, in addition to the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Awards in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance. In 2009 she was a recipient of a United States Artist Fellowship.
